REMAINING GATEWAYS OF THE OLD MAGAZINE
WITH THEIR ADJOINING BUILDINGS (NEAR G.P.O.)-
The two gateways standing in front of the General Post Office, south ofKashmiri gate, mark the site of the old magazine blown up in 1857 during the First War ofIndependence. It was an extensive fortified building stretching upto the river Yamuna and a large quantity of ammunition was stored in this
magazine. On the orders of the officer-in-charge, Lieutenant Willonghby, it was blown up so that the mutineers could not use the ammunition.
