THE QUTB ARCHAEOLOGICAL AREA: ALA'I-DARWAZA
The southern gateway of the Quwwatu'l-Islam mosque, which was extended by Alaud- Din Khalji, is known as Ala'i-Darwaza and bears several
inscriptions mentioning the date of its building as A.H. 710 (A.D. 1311). It is the first building employing wholly the Islamic principles of construction and ornamentation. Its excellent
proportions, profuse geometrical carvings on the interior, inscriptional band of white marble and other decorative details in red stone make it a very pleasing structure.
